Featherweight Maintenance Class with Ranell Hansen

One of our most popular classes. Learn how to maintain, clean and perform basic service on your Singer Featherweight 221 sewing machine. In this hands-on class we will learn how to clean, oil and lubricate the Featherweight. By the end of class you will be very familiar with the inside workings of your sewing machine.

Class Outline:

• Overview of Featherweight Machine

• Diagnose for problems

• Clean and oil all points

• Lubricate motor

• Clean and wax machine

• Test the machine on fabric

• Have fun

Supplies: (Have these ahead of time)

• Your sewing machine

• A small hand towel to set your machine on while you work on it

• A pair of disposable rubber gloves (the kind they use at the doctor’s office, not dishwashing gloves)

• Three screw drivers: *2 small screwdrivers plus a medium sized thin blade screw driver.

• *Sewing machine oil.

• *Sewing machine lubricant ( grease).

• *A small brush for cleaning out small places.

• Zomol Clean and Wax (Optional, but recommended) or use Maguires Clean and Wax from your local auto parts store. We will have a sample for you to try.

• *Roxanne’s Featherweight Maintenance Chart

• Lots of rags. I recommend cutting an old T-shirt into 6 inch squares.

• Toothpicks.

• Thread and fabric for practice.

Optional, but recommended supplies:

• *Long handled tweezers

• A long screwdriver if belt adjustment is needed

• Penetrating oil in case a screw is too tight to remove.

• *A new light bulb if needed, or a replacement LED light bulb

• *Drip Pan felt pad for the inside bottom of your machine if the old one is smelly. (It usually is)

• *A new belt if the old one is worn

• Chocolate

Recommended Resource: Featherweight 221, The Perfect Portable, by Nancy Johnson Srebro. This is a great book and not only has the history of the Featherweights, but the entire instruction manual plus a list of attachments with instructions. Highly recommended. Available at Roxanne's.
