Bush Medicine 2 - Black

Aboriginal people of Australia have identified numerous natural remedies for common sicknesses. In every Aboriginal community across Australia, you could find a ‘Medicine Man’ (doctor) and/or a ‘Spiritual Doctor’. While the Spiritual Man heals the ill by identifying the spiritual discord and by performing a traditional ritual to cease the sickness, the Medicine Man offers the right medicinal plant mixed with animal fats, to the person in need. Animal fats aid in dissolving these medicinal herbs inside the body and helps in speedy recovery.

Native herbs are chosen in the process of healing by the Medicine Man. Some of these herbs are easily found but some are seasonal making them hard to acquire. For this and various other reasons, the Medicine Man is also referred to as a Bush Clinician. A few of the bush medicines are Sticky hopbush, Beach bean, Mud, Sand etc.

Narelle Kitson comes from Willowra Community of Central Australia. She belongs to the Nangarrai family and speaks the Warlpiri language. Her dreamings mainly involve Sandhill, Medicine, Bush Food etc.

Bush Plum 2 - Red

Australian Flora is particularly rich in aromatic plants such as eucalyptus, tea trees, boronias, and mints and these plants have always been considered especially suitable for treating respiratory diseases. Aborigines have used a large number of them for treating illnesses. Gracie Morton is a skillful and experienced artist who depicted plums in an excellent way.

Australian Aborigines have drawn on the resources of the environment for medicines. Many plants have been used, generally without elaborate preparation. Plant material is very often bruised or pounded to use as a poultice or extracted with water to be taken internally. Plants of medicinal values contain extra chemicals, tannins, latex, alkaloids which are useful for making many medicines.

Utopia is an area of plum trees. There are an abundance of plum trees and plum seeds almost everywhere. Most of the Aboriginal inhabitants make very tasty loaves of bread from the plum seed powder. According to them it is one of the tastiest breads to eat. Roseanne Morton, being a very skillful artist, imagined and depicted the patterns of fallen seeds on the ground. Roseanne is the daughter of famous Aboriginal artist Gracie Morton.

Flowers in the Desert - Black

The Australian Outback is vast and displays a very harsh climate with extreme temperatures and almost no rainfall. Occasionally, when it rains, this deserted land showcases its prominence with the blossoms of beautiful flowers. The Aboriginal people of Australia consider this as a blessing and celebrate the blossom of wildflowers, pods, bush beds at their traditional rituals and corroboree (gatherings).

Aboriginal Women decorate themselves with these Wild Flowers, Daisies, Bush Leaves when they gather for dancing, singing, corroboree, storytelling etc. Some of these wildflowers are considered a representation of their spiritual ancestors in beautiful appearances. With winds and currents, these wildflowers sing, entertain and relax people of the land with their fragrance and angelic view.

Lauren Doolan comes from Santa Terese of Central Australia. She belongs to the Doolan family and speaks the Arrernte language. Her dreamings mainly involve Wild Desert Flowers, Dancing Spirits, Spirit People etc.

Fresh Life After Rain - Black

Central Australia is a semi desert area. Rain fall in this area is very rare. Vegetation is not plentiful. However, after several months of dry weather, sometimes Alice Springs get good rainfall. Suddenly the area starts blooming, with Australian wildflowers everywhere. The whole territory gets a new life. Visitors are greeted with an amazing array of colors——yellow, purple, red, green and many more. 

Christine Doolan is a good artist. She belongs to the famous Doolan family. Her art is bold and neat. Christine captured the Fresh Life after Rain with great imagination and skillful artwork.

Goanna and Snake - Black

There are many dreamtime stories about Goanna and rainbow Snake. One of the stories is that a man named Nyimbungi from the area known as Bungawalbin, called on Goanna. Nyimbungi knew that Goanna was more powerful than Rainbow Snake. Naturally, goanna would be able to refrain snake from eating Yabba (or bird).

Goanna was kind and listened to the man and decided to chase Rainbow Snake from the island (eastward) towards the coast. At Woodburn, they started going to the East and half way down the Evans River, Goanna caught the Rainbow Snake; but the snake quickly turned around and bit goanna on the head. Goanna temporarily withdrew from the battle in order to eat some herbs for his recovery from the bite. When he felt better, Goanna resumed his chase to Evans Head and looked around for Goanna. When he could not find Goanna, he decided to go back to the west. The Rainbow Snake then went into the Evans River and coiled itself around and created Snake Island.

Gathering by the River - Blue

Aboriginal people are regarded as the land owners of Australia. Their respect towards land is considered to be more than a place. They respect every mountain, river, waterhole, tree, animal etc. and they consider them as a part of their living. Aboriginal ancestors are believed to be the creators of all the land and objects that are essential in day-to-day life.

Traditional Aboriginal laws of food hunting involves bush food, sea food, wild life hunting etc. However, they never do anything to hoard or spoil the nature of their environment. They honor their ancestral lands and the teachings from those ancestors. In many occasions, Aboriginal people gather near the river for various ceremonial rituals, where they perform dances, rock-art, story-telling etc.

Barbara Egan comes from the Robinvale region of Victoria. She grew up on the Murray River in Robinvale. With her connection to the land of Robinvale and the Murray River, she would never move away from there. Her dreaming’s mainly involve River Dreaming, Emu Bush etc.

Anna Pitjara comes from Utopia region of Central Australia. The name Utopia (Uturupa), means ‘Big Sand Hill’, a region in the northwest of Central Australia. It is an amalgamation of several large and small communities. There are only a few schools, grocery supply stores, hospitals etc. in the remote areas of Utopia. Alice Springs, the nearest town is the best place for one-stop shopping. Highways, including unsigned roads, mud roads to local communities are a rich source of red-dirt as seen in the central deserts of Australia.

Land of Utopia - Red

The Utopia region of Australia is home to many Aboriginals covering over 3500 sq.km with the Sandover River in the vicinity. A few of them now live in the metro area of Alice Springs and others in the camping sites out in the bush. They prefer living close to the bush, taking care of their land. The two main languages spoken in this area are Alyawarr and Anmatyerre.

The name Utopia (Uturupa), means ‘Big Sand Hill’, a region in the northwest of Central Australia. It is an amalgamation of several large and small communities. Plum Seeds - Black

Kathleen Pitjara comes from Utopia, NT. Utopia is about 270 KM north east of Alice Spring. There are about 2000 Aboriginal people living in Utopia. Kathleen is a fabulous artist. Her dreaming is Bush Plum Seed.

Once, in the Dreamtime winds blew from all directions to Utopia, carrying Bush Plum seeds of the ancestral land. The first Bush Plum seeds of the dreaming grew and bore fruits and eventually dropped more seeds. To ensure the continued fruiting of this plant in each season, the Aboriginal people pay homage to the spirit of the bush plum by painting plum seeds, as well as by singing, dancing and storytelling in ceremonies. Aboriginal people also make very tasty bread dough from the paste of Plum Seeds.

There is a beautiful Aboriginal story about Bush Plum seeds. When a young girl falls in love, she goes to her female relatives and friends for right advice. She usually receives instructions from them. The young girl is instructed to weave a belt out of her hair while singing Yilpinji songs imbuing the belt with magic. When the man approaches her, she entices him with the charm, until he comes under the influence of her allure. She reveals the belt as his ardour grows and persuades him to place the belt on her waist. As he does, he falls under her spell and they go off together as a couple. Together they eat Bush Plums and hunt for food.

Sandhill - Charcoal

Geographically, a dune is a hill of sand built by wind action that results in dunes of many different shapes and sizes. The importance of dunes is recognized by some countries namely United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand which have developed significant programs for protecting dunes by stabilizing them. In Central Australia there are many beautiful sand hills which provide a habitat for highly specialized forms of flora and fauna. Well known artist Anna Pitjara, beautifully depicts these sand hills on canvas with acrylic paints. Using white dots on a black background Anna portrays the effect of wind moving over the sand hills in the desert landscape near her hometown Utopia

Seven Sisters - Black

Australian Aboriginal people tell several stories about seven sisters from the Dreaming Time which is the time of creation of the universe by their ancestors. This story of seven sisters originated from the culture of stars in the Taurus constellation.

There were seven sisters who were all beautiful and elegant. Every man who saw them wished to marry one of the sisters. One day the sisters went into the bush with their digging sticks to gather foods including wood ants, witchetty grubs and honey ants. After a successful expedition, they sat down to enjoy a feast, never imagining that a lonely warrior named Warrumma was hiding close by, watching them. While the sisters were eating, Warrumma took away two of the digging sticks and hid them. All the sisters looked for the two lost sticks in vain but eventually the five sisters who still had their digging sticks sadly left without the two sisters whose sticks had been taken.

Clever Warrumma came out of hiding and firmly grabbed the two sisters by their waists. He promised the girls that he would take good care of them and would marry them. The two girls decided that they would pretend to agree to Warrumma’s plan, while looking for the opportunity to escape. One day they were asked to cut pine bark to make a fire. As soon as the girls climbed the pine trees, those trees started to grow right up to sky. Warrumma shouted in vain for the girls to come down. But they kept climbing and were soon warmly welcomed to the sky by the five sisters anxiously waiting for them, If you observe the constellation carefully you may see the two freed girls as they arrive at their sisters camp in the sky.

Artist Marlene Doolan is from Santa Teresa in the Northern Territory. In her painting she depicts luminous heavenly bodies suspended in the desert night sky. The Milky Way is represented as clouds of dots of different sizes and major stars are represented as a large dot surrounded by circles.

Audrey Martin Napanangka is a well-known Aboriginal Artist from Yuendumu central. She is experienced with Bush Tucker, Bush onion, Bush Coconut and another bush dreaming. She has an excellent color sense. Despite her artwork, Audrey is a very experienced bush tucker collector. Normally she collects bush Tucker, Bush Onion, Bush Coconut, Bush Banana and many others. Audrey is skilled in collecting the right, flowers, fruits, grubs, caterpillars, honey ants and many more. Being an Aboriginal artist, she draws numerous images of bush beans, bush food. Audrey’s artwork is colorful and attractive. Many of her works are published in books and magazines.
